Does God Exist

Before you read: This article is part of a larger series that builds on itself from the foundation up, with each study building on the last. If something in this article does not make sense to you or if you believe it to be incorrect please be sure you have read over the entire course before passing your final judgment. Also be sure to visit this page’s FAQ And Objections: Does God Exist

Does God exist? That’s a question asked over and over. Yet, there are many people who deny the only logical answer. That answer is yes.

Did you know that even the Atheist believes in a God? The difference between the Atheist and the Christian isn’t about if there is or is not a God. The difference is in our understanding of the NATURE of God.

Let me explain that. Christians believe in a causeless cause (the eternal God who always was and always will be). The Atheist also believes in a causeless cause. They have no choice. Either the universe is self-existing or the universe was created by something else that existed from eternity past.

Now, I said both the Atheist and the Christian believe in a God. When I say that I am saying that we both believe in this causeless cause. But, our understanding of this causeless cause is different from each other.

Does God Exist

Every time someone asks, “Does God exist?” the answer comes down to one subject. What was in the beginning? It is the age old question “Why?”

This question DOES have an answer. But it is up to you to accept it or not. Which is why many people say it doesn’t have an answer because they do not want to accept the only one there is.

The big bang theory itself shows that there was a beginning. The Atheist calls that thing which created the universe as we know it a singularity. It’s a single point of energy. The Christian calls that original ball of energy God.

The Bible says, in the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. In this simple statement, it declares that the heavens and the earth had a beginning, but God does not. He is the only thing that the Bible says was not created.

Now that raises a few questions:

1. Doesn’t everything have to have a beginning, including God?
2. If God can exist without a beginning then why couldn’t the universe?

There are 2 basic beliefs about the beginning. One is that a God always existed and created the universe. The other is that the universe has always existed, without a God. I believe the universe does not exist on its own. It is something God created.

I believe that because the universe is subject to the laws of cause and effect. Whatever the causeless cause is, it must not be subject to these laws to exist. But, the universe IS subject to these laws. So that rules a self-existing universe out.

Another reason to believe that there must be a causeless cause. One with a will and thoughts of it’s own, is because there are a lot of random things in the universe. That would imply freewill and a thought process.

We all know that an object in motion will stay in motion and an object at rest will stay at rest. Unless acted upon by another force.

What force caused you to choose which clothes you would wear today? It was your freewill and thought that made a choice to get up this morning. Without a causeless cause which has a will and thought process there would be no motion at all.

But these 2 questions can not and will not be answered by discovering how the universe works, or by discovering how old things are. There is plenty of room for apologetics, but God has not chosen these things to prove He is there.

There is a simple reason I can make this statement with absolute certainty.

Job 26:13-14

13 By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent. 14 Lo, these are parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? but the thunder of his power who can understand?

We have no idea how God has done the things that He has. To this day we still have not measured the heavens. Most of what we know (or think we know) of the universe is only our best guesses. We still don’t understand how or why gravity works, why we have thoughts and feelings, or even how our own bodies work.

There is too much to learn. Read chapters 38-39 in the book of Job and you will begin to see how little we actually know, and how much there is to know. So we can’t answer those questions from knowing how things work. We can only answer them by knowing that they do work in spite of our ignorance.

So having the answers is not how God wants us to be able to come to the truth that He is there.

The Great Intellectual Trap

2 Timothy 3:7

7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Gravity is a theory

“I have to understand something before I can accept it.” On the surface, this statement may seem right. But let me ask you something. Do you understand gravity? Did you know that gravity is still a theory? Go ahead and look it up.

Now, if you choose not to accept gravity because you don’t understand it, then you may decide to jump off a building. You will end up dead. But you won’t do that, will you? Why?

Because even though you don’t fully understand it you have seen it work. You know that what goes up must come down, simply because it always has. Because of this you have faith in gravity and will not leap to your death.

Now, do you have to understand God before you can accept Him? Of course not, … and I am going to tell you why.

Romans 1:18-20

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; 19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

We have PROOF of the existence of God. Here are some examples of God at work from creation:

1. Can anything happen without a cause?

This is one of the first sets of laws you learn in science class. Nothing happens without something making it happen. Or to put it another way, nothing can be made without a maker. The entire universe is ruled by this law. Because of this fact alone, the universe is impossible.

Even A Circle Has A Beginning And End

But, if there was something that was not ruled by this law then all things would be possible (Matthew 19:26). So, because the universe does exist, and because it is ruled by this law, there must be a God.

Or, a causeless cause if you are not able to make that leap yet. A causeless cause that is not ruled by this law. In effect, He must be from everlasting to everlasting (without a beginning or an end).

So in this we can see that the universe is subject to laws that would make it impossible to exist on its own. Thus the universe could not be eternal.

We also see that the universe DOES exist. And, it is impossible for that to happen without a God who is not limited by those same laws. Simple logic says that there MUST be a God. Even quantum mechanics is still subject to this.

2. Can order come from chaos?

Take 9 numbered cards and shuffle them. What are the odds of having all 9 numbers line up in order? Not good, but still possible. Now take those cards, put them out of order, and don’t touch them. Without your intervention they will not line up on their own at all!

We see two things from this experiment. The first is that the odds of this small scale example forming order at random is staggering. The second is that the odds of this small scale example forming order at random with no outside force is zero.

Even if things come together on their own it is because there are rules and laws that force it to happen. Those rules and laws are an outside force unto themselves.

So, because there must be an outside force to shuffle the cards, we can see that God (the one holding all the cards) is a God that makes rules which must be followed.

This God set the laws and order of the universe for it to follow.

3. Can the weak out power the strong?

A child trying to shove a sumo wrestler out of the ring would not have a chance. When it comes to intelligence, a wise man will outsmart a foolish man. A bullet will reach its destination before a snail.

God has the strength to enforce His laws, the wisdom to outsmart even the wisest man, and the speed to overtake a ray of light. How do I know? Because He made the laws, made man, and made light. The creator is over the creature. The only way this could not be true is if the creator became weak, or if the creation became stronger.

The universe still obeys the laws set by God. And, since we still don’t have even the first hint of being stronger than God, … this shows that we are subject to Him.

4. Is God still active?

The Bible says “For in him we live, and move, and have our being.” When you consider that the entire universe is made up of energy (yes, matter is made of energy) you must ask yourself what this energy is. It must have been there at the beginning to make the universe. It must also be here now. It is existence itself.

5. Does God care?

When an artist paints a picture he hopes others will see it. When a builder makes a building he hopes someone will use it. Even if we don’t plan to keep what we make it still serves a purpose to us. We care enough about it to make it and to decide what happens to it.

So it can be seen that God also cared enough to make us and cares enough to decide what will happen with us.

Faith Is Not Blind

These are only a few things that can we can know about God.

I have heard the argument many times that the Christian can not accept that they don’t know something. So they “make up a God.” But the Atheist is only admitting to being ignorant and being proud of it when they say “I don’t know.” Why don’t they know? There is more than enough evidence.

It’s because they refuse to accept the only answer they can find. So they are in a continual search for a different “truth.” So they prove the Bible is correct that they are ever learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

As I said earlier, there is no way to understand everything. But in these 5 examples we can see that there is a God. A God who is in control. A God who is all-powerful, is not bound by the same rules and laws that we are, and who cares about what happens to us.

Now we can accept this the same way we accept gravity. By faith. This is NOT blind faith! We have examples and evidence. We just don’t understand it all.

So we can believe there is a God because of these examples and we can act like we believe it. Which means we should be trying to know this God who made us.

Like gravity, we accept He is there because of the evidence. We live our lives as someone who believes it (by coming to know our creator). So I ask you this question: Will you come to the knowledge of the truth that there is a God? Or, will you always be trying to understand something that is far above you? Will you never accept that He is there because of ignorance?

This study has only been to answer the question, does God exist. I have not given reason yet to believe it is the God of the Bible. We will find those reasons in the next studies.

I have been searching and searching for an understanding of what happened when I was just 7 years old. I accepted Christ and was baptized in my Grandma’s church. My mother took me away after that and had no Bible around the house at all. My only example was my Grandma. I am now 57 to be 58. Today I found this site and will be doing all the studies to learn how to live as a Christian and Believe in the God who made me.

I found comfort in knowing that “Havinf the answers is not how God wants us to know the Truth that God is there.” What peace that brings. “Trust and Obey, there is no other way.”

I want to learn Bible school online free from you that l can fulfill God’s missions according to Matthew 28:19-20 in this earth.
My question have here did you give someone certificate who complete courses?

    • Jason Evans says:

I’m glad you want to learn what’s in the Bible Elijah. Sadly men often want to see some kind of “credentials” before they can accept someone as sent from God to speak His word into their life. While I have been ordained I still believe one should never need a certificate to share God’s word. So at this time no certificate is offered. If you feel having such a thing will help your ministry (as it can help open some doors) I suggest you speak with your local church leaders.

Thank you for this study, I have been thinking for a long time that I had lost my faith, but now I know (Praise God) that I do still have my faith. I still have my Lord and savior Jesus Christ, He has been here all along, I had just pushed him aside. Thank you
